Delaware became the first nation to legalize sports betting following the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn a 1992 law that prohibited all states besides Nevada from having lawful sports gambling.

Is sports betting legal in Delaware?
You bet it is. Starting on June 5, 2018, Delaware started accepting sports wagers in Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Raceway. Governor John Carney placed the first bet– a $10 winning bet on the Phillies.

Delaware became the first country in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to enact legal sports betting beyond Nevada. The cause of this is largely due to the fact that they already had the infrastructure in place. They’d allowed parlay bets on NFL games. Here’s a description in the New York Times:

Whenever the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was enacted in 1992, it contained an exemption that enabled Delaware, Montana, Oregon and Nevada to keep at least some sports-betting operations.

In Delaware, that was a very niche merchandise of parlay-style wagering on N.F.L. football, Ms. Slane said. This long-existing structure also helped Delaware take the lead.

So turning on the change, so to speak, for more traditional forms of sports gambling was simple.

Is online sports betting legal in Delaware?
Not yet. Online sportsbooks are coming soon — probably sometime in the summer of 2018 — to Delaware, but they were not legal as of the state’s launching of casino-based sportsbooks. Lawmakers likely would like to see how that goes first before making it available online.

Once Delaware sports betting goes online, we anticipate the conventional players, such as DraftKings, FanDuel and William Hill, to have a presence in the nation.

Those companies have been striking partnerships with different land-based casinos. What the programs will look like — whether white-labeled for a casino or a part of this canonical app — remains to be seen, however DraftKings and FanDuel seem particularly well-positioned to take advantage of the online gaming boom.

What sorts of stakes will I have the ability to set?
