Logician goes into the unknown

John Gosden admits Logician confronts a step into unknown territory as he wants to provide him with a fifth victory in the William Hill St Leger.
It’s 23 years since the world’s oldest grey was developed by Clarehaven’s master with Shantou. He has added to his tally with three wins in five years courtesy of Lucarno (2007), Arctic Cosmos (2010) Masked Marvel (2011).
At winning his first 3 starts, the Khalid Abdullah-owned Logician produced his debut just in May, but made a huge impression – with a pair of solid wins at Newbury sandwiching a screen in Newmarket.
Frankel’s son graduated using a victory in the Great Voltigeur at York a month and will line up at Doncaster on Saturday.
„He has been in good shape since York. He is very much a work in advance and did not start racing until late in life,“ said Gosden.
„I thought back May he might be a Leger horse. He won a maiden down at Newbury, and then a rookie above a mile and a quarter at the July route and then a 0-90 disability back at Newbury, when it was the first time he was ridden by Frankie. He’s come a very long way in a short moment.
„He awakened again at the Great Voltigeur, and we were really satisfied with him.
„He is fine on top of the floor, there’s no doubt he is a better horse good, easy side of goodness, but that might go for a couple others.“
Gosden believes the choice not to run Logician as a two-year-old and instead give him the a while to grow continues to be key.
He explained:“He came to us quite late, and I think giving him this time has benefited him.
„He’s a nice horse to be about. He has a stride and is a character that is relaxed.
„I think the fine, long right at Doncaster must suit him nicely.“
The two obvious questions hanging Logician heading in the Town Moor showpiece are whether his lack of big-race experience might prove his undoing, and whether his stamina will last out over the one-mile-six-furlong space.
Assessing both facets, Gosden included:“We’ve been blessed to win the Leger four occasions, and those horses were more seasoned than him. It is a suitable test of a thoroughbred within that excursion – the 185 yards may be telling, and also the one-mile-six is some thing.
„You always know you moving into uncharted lands with a young horse like him. It is not like he has obtained a trial.
„He gives me the signals, as he’s really relaxed, that he will stay “
As always, Gosden is aware of their resistance – giving special mention to the Mark Johnston-trained Sir Ron Priestley, who maintained his fourth win in six starts this season in last month March Stakes at Goodwood.
He said:“I think it’s a solid renewal. You have a horse on the market which acquired the March Stakes and remained also. This was a race I saw carefully, since we were second inside (together with Promissory).
„It will probably be an end-to-end gallop, and that isn’t a bad thing as it thins out the field.
„You’ll get trouble in conducting, and I remember a few horses which have been unfortunate not to win there. That will be left by me to the horse and Frankie – that they don’t need some instructions.
„When you find the horses that are still rolling involving the two-furlong marker and the one, that will tell us exactly what sort of quality Leger it’s.“
Dragon to fire
Il Paradiso and sir Dragonet give Aidan O’Brien a powerful hand.
The Ballydoyle handler maintained his sixth victory from the Town Moor showpiece with Kew Gardens 12 months back – including to his previous triumphs with Milan (2001), Brian Boru (2003), Scorpion (2005), Major Light (2013) and Capri (2017).
When preferred for the Investec Derby at Epsom in early June, chester Vase winner Sir Dragonet has had this year tilts at Classic glory, finishing a close-up fifth.
He had been defeated at odds-on on his return from a midsummer break at the Royal Whip Stakes at the Curragh last month, but O’Brien believes his charge will likely strip much fitter on Saturday – and can be confident the step up to a mile plus three-quarters won’t be an problem.
Assessing the major market equal to the John Gosden-trained Logician,“ O’Brien said:“Sir Dragonet is a horse that has plenty of class.
„He was only ready to start back at the Curragh. He got a little bit exhausted, which he had been entitled to perform. I was being cautious and gentle .
„He’s never run anything less than a mile and a half an hour, other than the previous day above a mile and a quarter. He was started by us and that we believe there is a chance.
„I don’t believe he is earth reliant. That has been great floor, and he just ran before Epsom on earth, and he also came from that perfect.
„There isn’t any doubt his best run was that his Epsom run.“
Sir Dragonet Il Paradiso has proved his endurance, having generated a career-best performance when next behind celebrity stayer Stradivarius at the Lonsdale Cup last month more than two kilometers.
„He remains very well and looks like a horse which will get a Gold Cup excursion – he looks like he’ll get two and a half miles,“ O’Brien added.
„I presume he is going to be happy . He doesn’t mind being ridden forward. You would be riding him as you’re certain he will remain and the other (Sir Dragonet) you will be taking time using a little, I would imagine.“
O’Brien also saddles rank outsider Western Australia.
Sir Ron Priestley has five of his six starts this season – his only blip coming in Royal Ascot. Mark Johnston’s charge is unbeaten in 3 looks and measures up to Group 1 degree for the first time.
Johnston, with a second string to his bow Nayef Road, said:“He (Sir Ron Priestley) has got a lot to locate, and it might need to become a career-best, however, he deserves to be there.
„He’s done almost everything right from the lower levels, with the exception of Royal Ascot. Now he has got to step up to the major one.
„I never dismiss the Leger, since I’ve run some high horses inside and they have been beaten. We all know he gets the excursion, thus we have no doubts about him there.
„Most of these in there will be receiving the trip – they are class horses, which that they ought to do. He stays the trip very well and can be a genuine horse“
Dashing Willoughby, from the lawn of Andrew Balding and martyn Meade’s Geoffrey Freer winner Technician, finish the eight-strong area.
Balding said of the Royal Ascot winner:“He has run nicely at Newmarket on Goodwood on fast ground so he does not need to get it tender.
„He has run into a fair level all year and been very consistent, so I would expect he would run well“
